Izora McKinney Prentice Joins the Ranks of Leading Professionals
Izora McKinney Prentice dedicated 46 years to enriching the minds of America's youth
Los Angeles, CA, October 27, 2010 /Hispanic PR News/ -- Izora McKinney Prentice, a retired teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in education.
Mrs. Izora McKinney Prentice dedicated 46 years to enriching the minds of America's youth by encouraging them to have a passion for learning and to excel in all they do. Izora was born in Lee County, Arkansas, grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School as valedictorian of her class. She received a two year scholarship to Dunbar Junior College in Little Rock, Arkansas. These two years of education did not satisfy her thirst for learning and more education. She applied for admission to Arkansas AM&N College, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and graduated in 1943.
Izora then taught in the high schools. In the summer of 1948 she enrolled at Teacher's College at Columbia University in New York City. This was an exciting time for her. The Arkansas Department of Education paid the expense for that summer's study at Columbia University because of the segregation of schools at that time. She did not continue with that program for many reasons. It was not until 1975 in Los Angeles, California that she received her Master's Degree from Pepperdine University. She had been teaching in California since 1966 and had studied on Saturdays at UCLA's extension classes to keep abreast of the times and education.
In 1988 she retired from the Los Angeles City Schools. For a short period of time she was employed by the city of Inglewood, CA to teach in a program for immigrants called English as a Second Language, so that they could learn basic English for obtaining citizenship. She found a volunteer job with the County of Los Angeles in a program called the Mini Twelve Step House, Inc. She received an award from the county on December 12, 1991 for this service.
In 1993 she moved to Hampton, Virginia to be near her daughter, Marcia A. Poulson, and her family of five, which include her three grandchildren: Marisa, Micah and Madelynn. It has been her privilege to pass on to them those things that she taught to others; integrity, discipline, passion for learning and giving back to the community in which we live to make it a better place.
Her volunteer activities have continued. She founded a branch of the National Association of University Women in Hampton, VA. She is a member of the National Council of Negro Women, the NAACP, and she leads a senior group at her church and volunteered at all the elementary schools where her grandchildren attended.
All of this activity and movement has been possible because she has an undisturbed faith in God.
