Altares & Ofrendas Exhibit on Cherokee Street
ST. LOUIS, MO, October 29, 2008 /Hispanic PR News/ -- Sponsored by the CSBA Cherokee Station Business Association, El Centro Cultural de M xico in St. Louis will celebrate the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), with a two day family event Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1-2 on Cherokee Street and surrounding neighborhoods.
The Day of the Dead celebration will be held each day from 1:00 p.m. to 10: 00 p.m. and will feature a variety of hands-on activities, demonstrations, and an Altar exhibit along Cherokee Street from Lemp Ave. to Gravois Ave. reflecting the traditions associated with this holiday.
Day of the Dead is a time for families to celebrate and commemorate loved ones who have died. Although its roots are pre-Colombian, the holiday continues to be observed as one of the most important holidays in Mexico as well as other Central and South American countries.
Minerva Lopez of El Centro Cultural de M xico in St. Louis describes the event as: "A celebration of a time-honored tradition in our community that reminds us of our life purpose, and allows us to renew our commitment to a more meaningful life".
Day of the Dead festivities will begin with the building of an Ofrenda - an altar used to display portraits, foods, and special possessions and memories of a loved one. There will also be free workshops throughout the month , attendees can learn how to make traditional Day of the Dead crafts, such as Sugar Skulls, Papel Picado (Colorful cut out paper), and Pan de Muerto (Day of the Dead bread).
